Alon Mesika, owner of a jewelry manufacturing company, is keeping his son's memory alive by what he calls "building houses in Israel." But what does he mean by this? Alon tragically lost his son Addir on October 7, 2023, during the Nova music festival, where Addir and most of his closest friends were murdered. Addir, a surfer who loved to travel, was working on starting his own jewelry business.
After sitting shiva for seven days and then mourning for another 30, Alon felt the need to keep busy and distract himself from the pain of losing his son. During this time, with many people in the army and numerous marriages occurring within the army bases, Alon decided to reach out on Facebook. He promised a ring to the first soldier to respond to his message.
Within six minutes, he received a call and fulfilled his promise, giving away a ring to the soldier who then proposed the next day. Despite disappointing another soldier who called the following day, Alon couldn't bear to hear the disappointment and offered him a ring too.
Since then, Alon has given away over 81 half-carat diamond rings. He finds the best part of this gesture is receiving hugs from the soldiers. He emphasizes that his actions counter the intentions of Hamas and terrorists who seek to harm Israelis and Jews. Alon's belief is that by giving rings to soldiers, he's symbolically building houses, opposing the destruction intended by terrorists.
